Gabi's final request for help

Gabi's blog has what looks like a farewell post...she's on her way to safety somewhere with Mary Carmen.

Her blog post includes Gabi's email address - she's promised to reply (eventually) if we send her our theory for who killed her dad.

Meanwhile, TheOldMan49 is still ranting on about the final clue being at Chaldexx. 

Still haven't spotted it...guess I need to look more closely.

Oh and...check out Psysop's account (look at post 26) of his version of Gabi's night run. His was way more dramatic than mine...I made her play too safe I think...

Day 26: Gabi's blogpost I think I've got this working tells us the plan. She's going to be using her BlackBerry to record voicenotes and send them to the Internet. Gabi has set up a little Website where we can follow her progress and help her navigate across the city to the Aztec Stadium. 

NB: The URL is the same as Gabi's name on Habbo...

BUT! As TheOldMan49 has pointed out in his tweets - Hans Runig knows about Gabi's meeting with Mary Carmen! They must have tapped her dad's BlackBerry - cos Mary Carmen's voicemails have just gone up on her surveillance file at Hans Runig's site.

NB: Psysop has spotted that the storm symbols on the Hans Runig site propobably represent the storm glyph mentioned in ICE SHOCK by Josh...which might confirm that Hans Runig is indeed part of - or in charge of - the Sect of Huracan...

It's a nail-biting finale. Won't tell you how it ends...try for yourself!

A tip: if you want to help Gabi by sending answers, open another tab/window to search Google. Gabi's program keeps running in the main one. Enable GPS tracking in Gabi's software to give readouts of each new location of hers.

Gabi thinks about handing herself in to Hans Runig - but she can't trust him.Then Mary Carmen gets in touch with Gabi. She tells her to meet her aunt at the Estadio Azteca (Aztec Stadium) in Mexico City at 1.30am. Gabi is excited and scared to think of trekking across the south of the city in the dead of night - alone. She decides to come up with a plan in the hours she has left...

Meanwhile Gabi's disappearance has started the police wondering if there is a connection between the kidnapping of the Ortiz family and Beltran's murder. Finally!

Gabi is now asking the question that we should be asking. WHO IS HANS RUNIG?

Spiralling Kidnap Crisis
Using the password on the Hans Runig site, listen to secret recordings of two more meetings between Bennett and DiCanio (CHQ-6LP -3 CHQ-6LP -4) and also phone message 4 from PJ Beltran.

Plot spoilers:

Gabi finally gets a call on her dad's Blackberry - it is her aunt Mary Carmen. Mary-Carmen has only just got round to replying to the pleas for help that Gabi has left on her voicemail. She tells Gabi that Gabi is in danger - and that Mary Carmen will help. A plan to get Gabi out of there will be coming up soon...

Meanwhile the police are still barking up the wrong tree - they think the Ortiz family have been kidnapped by a former client of Jessica's lawyer father, who wants revenge for not being saved from jail.

Listening to the secret recordings pretty much gives us all the clues we need to work out why PJ was killed and by who. I won't post my full theory here...but if you listen carefully you'll see that two organisations wanted the same thing - Beltran's research and anyone who knows what it could be used for. Beltran was asked nicely, it seems, and paid a lot of money. But maybe he didn't come through with the goods? Or maybe they just needed the DNA and stuff - and Beltran himself had to be silenced? 

Also - both organisations wanted Jackson Bennett to go to Iraq on a mission that only he could accomplish. We don't know exactly what that is, but it seems to involve an ancient artefact. We know that in ICE SHOCK Josh steals the Adaptor from Madison and the Sect. The Sect need access to a Revival Chamber, especially after they lose control of the one in Mexico. 

The question is - are these really TWO organisations? Or is one the secret, hidden identity of the other?

Watch Gabi's vids Gone and Leaving. TheOldMan49 tweets about a controversial article into which Mary Carmen had some input. He digs it out and posts the article Ancient Sumerian Biologists on his site, archaeologyconspiracies.com. This means we now know that TheOldMan49 is an in-game character, presumably one of the people who "oppose the global conspiracies that threaten to destroy the world." archaeologyconspiracies.com mentions the Sect of Huracan in at least two places as one of these suspicious global organisations.

Psysop has an interesting theory about the meaning of the symbols on the Adaptor...tying it in with part of the coded messages that Josh receives in ICE SHOCK from the mysterious time-traveller 'Arcadio'.

Plot spoilers:

Gabi is horrified to discover that her friend Jessica's family, the Ortizes have been kidnapped. Gabi was supposed to be out to dinner with them but went to see her mum in hospital instead. The police assume it's another horrible Mexico City kidnap, but Gabi fears the hand of Hans Runig. She decides that she can't go to the police and takes off, hanging out in coffee shops. posting to the blog from her dad's BlackBerry. In one of these coffee shops Gabi risks another chat with Hans Runig, who claims he did kidnap the Ortiz family. Runig tells Gabi that she has 3 days to hand over all her dad's research...or else Jessica and her family will pay.

The article Ancient Sumerian Biologists? is very technical, but it basically says that someone discovered an ancient clay tablet inscribed with specially modified Sumerian symbols that translate as amino acids - the chemicals that make up protein. There's a comment on the article - prob from TheOldMan49 although here he's called theheresiarch - saying that it's such an outrageous idea - that anyone in Sumerian times could know about amino acids - that they had to pull the article. TheOldman49 has posted it because it reminds him of the symbols on the Adaptor. 

Sure enough - if you translate the Sumerian symbols on the Adaptor - 

- they spell out the amino acid sequence agylihrppreikgr 

This is what Bennett calls the Beltran sequence, it's also the URL of Hans Runig's site which was set to pick up anyone searching for that sequence on the Web.

Watch Gabi's vid Ancient Sumerian

Gabi is putting together clues from Bennett's blog and the hacked Hans Runig site. She's worked out that the Sumerian symbols on Hans Runig's site also reads as the site password. She's listened to conversations between Bennett and DiCanio and has noticed that they mention an ancient race called the 'Anunnaki'. If you look at archaeologyconspiracies.com you'll find an article Sumeria and the Anunnaki which explains a bit about the Anunnaki - thought to be "a race of human-alien hybrids who were sent to help humans build a civilisation". 

If you look at the article you'll also see that the symbols that spell 'Anunnaki' in Sumerian also appear on the Adaptor: 

And in the article TranslateAncient Script there's a link to a document for translating Sumerian to English. You can use this to translate the symbols on the Adaptor. Psysop has posted a translation to his thread. 

If you've read ICE SHOCK you'll know that the Adaptor is one of the relics that is needed to activate the Revival Chambers. We know from the news article at the beginning of ICE SHOCK that Simon Madison has stolen the Adaptor. He, his father Marius Martineau and someone known only as 'the Professor' - all members of the Sect of Huracan - try to activate a Revival Chamber in the depths under Becan - near to Ek Naab. You can see one side of the inscriptions on the Adaptor on the hacked Hans Runig site.

Gabi has worked out from Bennett's blog (see posts on 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th - password is genetica), that he went to meet scientists from Chaldexx in Switzerland. We also know that of course from the surveillance documents on the Huracan site, which have bugged conversations between Bennett and Melissa DiCanio from Chaldexx.

Gabi is now seriously worried about Josh, since she hasn't heard from him for 4 days. The last we heard from him, Josh was back from Saffron Walden and off to see about something else...from ICE SHOCK we know that he's probably referring to his visit to Ollie's house. In the book he doesn't actually return home from that, as ICE SHOCK drags him off to his own adventure. So Gabi may now think she's totally on her own. Except of course - she had US to help!

Gabi has finally got around to working out the password for the later posts on Bennett's blog and has caught up on what has been going on with Mary Carmen and Bennett until a few days ago. She has realised that Jackson has now gone to Iraq and her aunt has been quiet for over a week. Gabi guesses that her aunt is still hiding in a hotel somewhere, as she told Jackson she would. Gabi is beginning to think that the chat site guy, Hans Runig, killed her father. And she wonders ominously about the countdown on the site...what language are those symbols?

In fact, if you ask Hans 'did you kill PJ Beltran' or even about the symbols, or the password on the chat site, he will answer....

Like us (if you use the Poborsky lab to analyse the results), Gabi has also been sent the amino acid translation of the DNA. When she plugs that sequence into a search engine she comes across a strange site where she chats with a guy who seems to know something about her dad's death. To Gabi's horror, he also knows about her aunt and Gabi's visit to her aunt's place on the Vespa. And gives this sinister warning: La vida es la barata, pequeña, pero el mundo no lo es. (Life is cheap, little one, but the world isn't.) Meanwhile Josh isn't answering. Where could he be? If you've read ICE SHOCK you'll know...If you look at Gabi's post Close Call you'll see the text of Gabi's chat.

Finally - this is the Website that the ICE SHOCK coded message is needed for. 

Take the password supplied by Josh in his message and enter it - quickly! Before the site times you out. Then re-enter the password. Then you're in. 

This seems to be the secret surveillance documents of the Sect of Huracan - Josh's enemy in ICE SHOCK. There are audio files and chat transcripts there, all telling the story we know so far in more detail and from different viewpoints. There are also dossiers on all the characters plus one more - Col. Conor Bennett. This is Jackson's twin brother. He works for the Airforce and also the National Reconnaissance Office. You'll remember the NRO from INVISIBLE CITY - in that book Josh thinks they - or Madison - may have killed his dad, Andres Garcia. 

Psysop has done a nice analysis of the meanings of the various colour-statuses of the characters in their dossier. This way we can see which had been caught by the Sect at this stage, and which they are still chasing. Right now they are still chasing Gabi and her aunt Mary Carmen. 

You can also visit the site without using the password and chat with 'Hans Runig' the guy that Gabi spoke to. It's fun! You can ask him who killed PJ Beltran, about Gabi, other stuff. Good clues here.

Over these vids, Gabi wonders aloud if the test-tube contains DNA - which is made from letters, therefore information - maybe a coded message? Then she receives the results from Poborsky lab. It IS DNA - and she realises that this is the 'Beltran' sequence of which Jackson writes in his blog.

The Poborsky lab online service is working again. Go to the site and select the DNA Analyzer service and then pick out Bennett's test-tube (the one with Mary Carmen's phone number written on the lid.) I received the results by email about 24 hours later: 

If you put the amino acid sequence into a search engine you get a website.

Plot spoilers:

The tube contains DNA, just as Josh and Gabi suspected. The email gives the DNA sequence for the contents of the tube, and also the translation into protein sequence (amino acids). Beltran seems to have sent a message - coded into DNA. From Bennett's blog it doesn't look like PJ was actually intending to send a literal message. More like - PJ was working on this molecule. (maybe this is the thing Bennett calls phoenix? The website seems to be set up to attract anyone searching for that amino acid sequence on the Web. PJ wandered into it...I guess. And so did Bennett.

  

Extra note: MG reminded us to have our deciphered message from ICE SHOCK ready. If you haven't already deciphered it (I have) you can use Psysop's very useful cipher key that I have NO idea how he worked out without Invisible City, but 

...it works...i.e. you get a message from Josh, with a password. Haven't found how/where to use it though.

Or - if you've read APOCALYPSE MOON you'll know that Josh and Ixchel use this password to get into the secret site of the Sect of Huracan.

My guess is that this is where Josh's own story is going to take overlap with Gabi's. Or not? because in ICE SHOCK, Josh leaves the country pretty soon after he hears the mysterious news from 'Rodrigo'. The gist is that Josh has started again on the trail of more information about his father's death. Andres was seen in a village called Saffron Walden, the day he was thought to have crashed his plane in Mexico. So Josh is distracted now... working on his own stuff.

Gabi realises that MCV from Bennett's blog is Mary Carmen Valencia - her father's cousin. She calls her aunt to hear just a voice message. Gabi goes round to her aunty's apartment on a the Vespa belonging to her friends brother, only to find it beign watched by the ominous men in grey suits who drive a black Ford Explorer. We know these from Bennett's blog - they are the guys who chased him, who prob killed PJ Beltran and his graduate student Simon Reyes.

Josh posts a comment on Gabi's blog telling her to be careful - these men in grey may have seen her face now, in which case she's for it. But as Psysop points out on unfiction - what if they've seen the license plates on the Vespa...? Gabi's not too worried. She thinks they haven't put it together yet that SHE is PJ's daughter. Hmmm...we'll see.

Extra bit #1: Forgot to mention that that Mary Carmen Valencia is mentioned in two other in-game sites; watch closely the YouTube vid trailer for INVISIBLE CITY and also as the co-author of a paper on this in-game site with Josh's dad Andres Garcia. The paper is titled: In search of a Fifth codex ofthe Ancient Maya

Basically, Josh and Gabi talked about the lab that her aunty Mary-Carmen took the test-tubes to for testing. (see above - the Poborsky lab). Josh googles and finds the virtual lab site for Magda Poborky's online lab - an online service which lab members can use to ask a technician finish their work if they can't make it into the lab.

The online service isn't working for Gabi either. So they are waiting to test a sample...because guess what? Mary Carmen left Bennett's tube in the test-tube rack! It's there for us all to see. 
But the service works now! test it at the Poborsky online lab.

And it has Mary-Carmen's number on it! I know cos I called it...

Extra bit #2: The phone number is 55-84-21-43-99. A Mexico number so to call from UK you need prefix 00-52

There's a phone message from MCV. Apparently she's out of town.

Hey - loads happening now!

Gabi starts looking at her dad's blog and Jackson Bennett's blog - she works out from a hint on Bennett's first post that the password is (highlight spoiler) isa.

Gabi's dad was working with this company called Chaldexx www.chaldexx.com - fact that's where he was visiting when away on a trip at the beginning. Meanwhile Bennett uses his blog to communicate with the person who helped him to escape - a woman who signs herself MCV. 

Reading the blog posts, it looks like MCV and Bennett also had a fling - and they're getting all romantic. Mainly though they talk about what MCV has been doing to solve the mystery of - you guessed it - what is in the test-tube that PJ Beltran gave to Bennett?

MCV goes to a friend who runs a lab (Magda Poborsky). She finds that the test-tube contains a DNA sequence - Bennett and her call it the BELTRAN sequence. A completely unknown sequence - not found in any plant or animal on Earth! (alien interference anyone?) 

Bennett types the sequence into a Web browser and gets taken to a Website where there's a chat window. He chats with someone online called HANS RUNIG - someone who seems to know who Bennett is. But as Bennett chats he realises that his IP address is being traced. This could lead to his location being discovered. He cuts the internet connection. MCV says she's coming back to her flat.

NB - around this time MCV learns that PJ Beltran is dead - she's upset. He was her cousin! Now we know why MCV's telephone number was written on the test-tube that PJ gave to Bennett - he wanted to lead Bennett to MCV, just in case.

I found this on a sticky written (in Morse code) by Psysop in Habbo. Psysop got it from TheOldMan49's twitter feed, where TheOldMan49 tweeted it in code.

Now...it starts to get complicated. A whole other story emerges between Jackson Bennett and MCV. 

Bennett gets an invitation - out of the blue - to visit the top scientist at Chaldexx in Switzerland (her name is Melissa DiCanio). MCV and Bennett agree to part - Chaldexx's private jet will get him out of Mexico quietly so whoever is after him will be shaken off. MCV says she'll hide out in a hotel at the beach.

Bennett begins to understand the nature of the work that PJ was doing. It gets a bit sciency! The gist is that 

PJ was working with Chaldexx on some super-secret project involving a maize gene called phoenix. 

Bennett works on a related gene - joust - from fruitfly. But there's also a human version. And the human version - Melissa DiCanio claims, can give certain people the power of mind control. 

Meanwhile, Bennett talks again to HANS RUNIG. 

BOTH Runig and DiCanio wants Bennett to go to Iraq to get an ancient artefact. It can only be touched by people protected by a certain gene...and Bennett has the gene (aha - a connection with Invisible City!). 

Bennett decides to accept the mission for DiCanio/Chaldexx and NOT Runig. He's all set to go to Iraq when MCV discovers something ominous in an ancient Sumerian inscription - and she warns him not to go.

But is it already too late?

A walkthrough the mystery of PJ Beltran's death. We will explore the evidence that's scattered across the Web as it is discovered by Gabi Beltran and Josh Garcia. We'll watch Gabi's video blogs and unravel the story.

I will post something on every day in which something happened in the story. If nothing happens on DAY 2, there won't be a post that day. This will run for about a month, with something happening at least every two days.
